About

The Green Thread is a contemporary retelling of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the anonymous fourteenth-century poem preserved in a single manuscript — Cotton Nero A.x — in the British Library.

The novel is published anonymously, in the tradition of the Gawain-poet, whose identity remains unknown after six hundred years. The work speaks for itself or not at all.

The author has also translated the complete Middle English poem from the original — a poet’s translation, made to carry itself like the original in sound, word, and cadence. The translation is free to read on this site.

The novel was written under a public covenant during 2026. The covenant system lives on Art’s Ledger, where 2,530 makers pledge to create a work of art within the covenant year.

All objects — the novel, the poem, the chapbooks, the audiobook — are produced, handmade where possible, and fulfilled by Maison Kahn LLC.
